When you are backstage, there are several things that can affect the quality of images you take, one of which is time. You probably have an hour between the arrival time and the start of the show, if you are lucky. Unless your job there is purely to take backstage photos, you will have to spend some extra time looking for the best position as well.

Here are some tips to keep you focused:

  1. Look at the Faces, Not Fashion

People’s faces can give the best storytelling moments and this is generally true when it comes to photojournalism. Taking photos in a room full of very beautiful models wearing some of the best clothes can be distracting. You can easily be tempted to start going for easy shots and forget the work that took you there.

  1. Know Your Lenses

The backstage environment is normally overcrowded. As such, it would be a good idea to carry the smallest possible gear. This also means having a minimal physical footprint so that you can navigate the room easily and much faster. It also means having fewer lens changes as well as more time spent focusing on the scene instead of worrying about the gear.

  1. Situational Awareness

Backstage is usually crowded and full of confusion, particularly during early preparations. There are always a lot of things going on. But it is of great importance to maintain situational awareness throughout the working period.

Trip hazards such as makeup stands, wires, and people moving up and down are some of the challenges you must be prepared to face. It is also important to mind the other photographers and appreciate the fact that they have the same rights as you.

  1. Use a UV Filter

While this may sound technical, it is a useful tip to ensure that your gear is safe and ever-ready to shoot. You should understand that the air backstage is usually full of chemicals and all manner of perfumes, hair spray, and other substances. As such, you should cover the front part of your lens covered using a clear element for quick cleaning.

In a nutshell, fashion photography is interesting but comes with a number of challenges. As a fashion photojournalist, you must plan adequately and ensure you are always focused on the job.
